About Coach Kenworthy's "Best in the West" Summer Basketball Camp

The purpose of our "Best in the West" Summer Basketball Camp is to give every participant the opportunity to learn and enjoy the great game of basketball. Our Camp is open to both boys and girls ages 7-14 (kids going into 3rd-10th grades), regardless of their background, experience, ability level, or where they live. Our Camp is for kids who are just beginning to learn the game and for more experienced players who are serious about acquiring advanced skills to possibly earn a position and excel on their respective school teams.
We place special emphasis on learning the fundamentals of the game, but we also teach intermediate and advanced basketball skills and all aspects of the game, including offensive and defensive team play. We also emphasize team play and demonstrating a positive attitude both on and off the court. We constantly stress the value of hard work, giving one's best effort, and demonstrating good sportsmanship at all times.. It is our goal not only to have our campers learn and improve their basketball skills, but to acquire the many positive values and qualities that come from learning and playing the game in a competitive, fun, and supportive environment.
The Founder and Director of the Camp is Mr. Tim Kenworthy, a former standout player at Lynbrook High School and a two-sport scholarship athlete at U.C. Berkeley. Coach Kenworthy has been a long time high school and collegiate basketball coach and a Physical Education instructor who not only played college basketball at the highest level, but has coached at the middle school, high school, and collegiate levels for over 40 years. As a student-athlete at Lynbrook years ago, Coach Kenworthy lettered in three varsity sports, served as the school's Senior Class Vice President, and was honored as Lynbrook's "Senior Scholar-Athlete." As a three-year starter on the Boy's Varsity Basketball Team, Coach Kenworthy became and remains Lynbrook's all-time leading scorer, amassing 1,091 points during his varsity career. In his senior year, Coach Kenworthy led the Vikings to a 24-5 record- the school's best season ever; the school's first varsity league championship, and a 3rd place finish in the coveted Central Coast Section Playoffs. After being selected as the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League's Most Valuable Player, First Team All-Central Coast Section by the San Jose Mercury News and as one of the top 50 players in the State, Coach Kenworthy received a full athletic scholarship to UC Berkeley where he competed in both basketball and baseball for the California Golden Bears. As Lynbrook's Varsity Boy's Basketball Coach, Coach Kenworthy guided his teams to two consecutive league championships and five consecutive CCS playoff experiences. "Coach K." as he is frequently called, had similar success as a coach of high school and college teams in Alaska, in various parts of California, and overseas.
In addition to many years of coaching, Coach Kenworthy has been directing his own private basketball camps and clinics, directing basketball club organizations, and serving as a guest lecturer and basketball consultant both within and outside of the United States for more than four decades. One of Coach K's most memorable coaching experiences was taking an All-Star Team consisting of the best high school players in the Bay Area on tour to Taiwan one summer to play various Taiwanese Teams there. Recognized as an outstanding teacher and coach by colleagues, students, and administrators alike, Coach Kenworthy teaches the basic fundamentals and finer points of the game in a manner that is fun and enjoyable for boys and girls of all ages and ability levels. Coach Kenworthy utilizes top boys and girls varsity basketball players in the area and former H.S. players coming back from college to help instruct and counsel Camp participants.
In years past, both weeks of our Camp have been held at Lynbrook H.S., but due to heavy construction happening at the school last summer and in the summer of 2020 including modernization to one of the gyms, there will be no rentals to outside organizations such as ours this summer. Thus, we will have to hold the first week of our Camp at nearby Monta Vista H.S. in Cupertino and the second week at Fremont H.S. in Sunnyvale. While our parents in the Lynbrook area will have to drive 5-15 minutes more to get to Monta Vista and Fremont H.S., both of these sites will be closer to many of the clients who live near these two schools and attend our Camp each summer.
The last day of school for Cupertino Union School District schools in June of 2020 is Tuesday, June 9th. So this upcoming summer so parents can immediately sign their kids up for a worthwhile sports program such as our Camp right away, the first week of our Camp will begin Wednesday, June 10th and run 4 days through Saturday, June 13th. The following week our Camp will run five days, Monday-Friday, June 15-19. Parents can sign their kids up for either week or both weeks.
